A Happy Little Camper!

February 27, 2012

Sometimes the simplest idea is the best idea and for long rectangular shaped retail space getting that right idea can sometimes prove to be a very frustrating crusade. This is where the feature wall comes in, if you get the feature wall right like today’s project did then you can blow people away by the results.

Japanese Architect Shigeru Ban got this right when he designed the Camper store in the Soho district of New York City. The retail space is dominated by the large but functional red Camper wall that stretches the length of the store. To passersby on the street they look and see the large Camper logo but once you step into the store you can see that from the opposite end the large wall is a mixture of cubbies and inserts that allow the shoes to be stocked in 8 cleverly laid out panels on the wall. If you take this feature and mix in some of Shigeru Ban’s funky seating and furniture designs you have transformed a long monotonous and boring rectangular retail space into something that is both awesome and blogged the world over by your peers.
