Tokyo In Focus – Opening Ceremony, Harajuku!
Continuing this weeks tour through the world of interior design in Tokyo Japan, we thought we would shift gears and head towards the stunning artsy, hip and cool district of Harajuku, just outside the Shibuya district of Tokyo. Whilst strolling through its many cobbled streets and quirky passageways we saw a plethora of stunning examples of progressive interior design and architecture with one of our absolute favorites being the new Opening Ceremony store.
The store is split over 4 levels including a basement level and it is the very definition of awesomeness. It’s clear that this store has plenty of tributes to the pop art movement and the design is one that seeks to embrace the cool edgy and artistic feel of the Harajuku area. The bold colourful design we love so much is complimented perfectly by some of the best visual merchandising displays we have come across, some were a bit rude (not pictured) but hilarious all the same and certainly eye catching whilst other were just wickedly clever.
For me one of the things that really stands out in this store when I walked around open mouthed and drooling was the extraordinary high level of finishing and joinery as well as some of the clever materials used, from the images below most of you will hopefully agree with me that one of the coolest features about this project is the staircases.
Unfortunately these photos don’t show how each floor has their own unique staircase design but what I loved most is how these are actually done with a vinyl overlay on top of the polished concrete, a very clever trick that allows the store to change the look and feel of this feature at little extra cost in the future, thus keeping it fresh and current.
Jamo Associates have created an amazing retail experience that had us head over heels in love once we walked through the door, perhaps mainly because the “eye-mannequins” just screamed “coolness personified” and had us relaxed from the first instance, check out what else had us drooling in the images below, enjoy you cool cats 🙂
